Costumes For Women - The Choices You Have

It is usually easier to dress up women. This is so because, firstly, women's costumes have greater variety; besides women can dress up as anything and not look bad.

Women find it easier to shop for costumes because of the huge number of sexy designs there for them. For men, the choice is there but a trifle limited - also, women can appear sexier with lesser effort than men.

Since so many diverse options are available with you, you may be understandable confused as to what to wear for the party coming weekend. Before you sew, rent or buy the costume, consider the following queries:

- What do you want to become at the party? Have you given a shot at impersonating someone, say a fictitious character or even otherwise? Perhaps someone like a movie star like Marilyn Monroe or Pamela Anderson or a politician like Sarah Palin could serve as good choices. There can also be occupation-based options like the mail carrier, nurse, doctor or police officer. One may also bring to life fictitious, story book characters like Tinkerbell from Peter Pan and other fairies from a Midsummer's Night's Dream.

- Can your costume be classified as sexy or not? Can you be bold enough to show off your cleavage or legs or any other part of your body? In an adult party, a sexy costume sets the mood right.

- Could it be that you always had some character you fantasized about dressing up as? Perhaps you never got the right opportunity to wear it? Then the time was never too right for you to bring out your Cinderella dress, Baywatch swimwear or Elvira slinky gown - you can wear them for a night out.

Contrary to what most people think, the best costumes do not always have to be rented or bought. Doubtless costume shops have more variety of any one costume than any other person you can think of, but sometimes, making your own costume, sexy or otherwise, can be fun, rewarding and a lot more unique. Plus, you get to keep the costume as a souvenir.

The women's costumes can be very diverse. They may consist of:

1. Lives in bygone eras - The theme may be the Renaissance period or the Hippy era - for either one may find something from the golden olden times to wear to the party. Even when the theme is narrowed down to a given decade the same theme can be utilized. One may relive the 50s, 60s, 70s or 80s with poodle skirts, bell bottom jeans or gelled hair.

2. Another option includes the female superheroes or villains like Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Poison Ivy or Cruella De Vil which are all popular choices; they make the wearer very visible and have a larger than life persona.

3. Movie stars and other iconic figures - Famous people are often unique in the way they dress and talk and as such they are a great source of inspiration for women. One may masquerade as Madonna in her 80s days or Marilyn Monroe in her famous gust-of-wind pose. Also as role models are prominent social or political figures like Jackie O or Sarah Palin - dressing up like them will make your entry outstanding at the party.

4. Scary ghouls and witches - A woman in a witch costume complete with her wand, coned hat and broomstick can look drop dead gorgeous. Elvira the sexiest witch can be a good option.

5. Typical sexy figures - These include strippers, pole dancers and Playboy bunnies. The women's costumes are very sexy and very revealing; they can also serve as parodies of concerned occupations.

Women are lucky to be able to hike up the sex appeal of their costumes more than their male counterparts. A little leg here, a little more cleavage there and the entire costume changes from a normal, everyday costume for a masquerade to one that is sexy, daring and enticing. To leave little to the imagination, you could also opt for a tighter fit to flaunt all the feminine curves you have.

Just a trifle creativity and imaginativenes is needed to make a modest dress look sexy. For instance take the poodle skirts and shorten them - what you are bound to experience is a longer line of admirers!

Costumes allow you to live out your dream of being somebody else so if you are given that opportunity, go take it and make the most out of it.

I want to make a skirt out of tissue lame. Is it better to hand sew this or use a sewing machine?

I'm planning on doing a tiered/ ruffle effect, and need to do alot of sewing. I don't want to ruin the fabric as this design will require quite a few yards of fabric. Additionally, does anyone know where to buy a COTTON tissue lame? I know this exists, but have yet to find it. I have only found nylon-polyester blends which ... are polyester- nylon. ICK! Any help would be much appreciated.

What I think you're thinking of as cotton tissue lame is generally sold as "quilter's lame", and doesn't have much cotton. e.g.:

Miserable stuff to sew, and not as shiny as tissue lame, which is also miserable to sew.

Tissue lame tends to shred under the slightest provocation. My suggestion is to serge it and back each seam with something like "seamsgreat" or other lightweight stable fabric. Some people have been known to fuse the lame to lightweight interfacing... that may help your ruffled effect. Or consider underlining with organza.
