Confessions Of An Obsessive Compulsive Kitchen Curtain Fanatic

Maybe it is just me, but whenever I want to go out and get some drapes for my kitchen I run into problems. Although the kitchen that I have right now is a bit too small for me to want to spend a whole bunch of time in, the kitchen has been my favorite room for hanging out in every house that we have had in the recent past. It almost seems love there is a small window conspiracy going on as every kitchen that I encounter as my own has small ones and as a result I have to get small kitchen shades. I don't know if it's just me, but I can never find sheers that I love.

Looking for these kitchen window treatments has taken up way too much of my time recently. The reality of this is truly bordering on neurotic and it is really becoming a pain. I have gone everywhere and looked in all locations that I can think of and there is no drapes around that I love for my kitchen. It should be a simple matter of choosing a color or pattern that will match what is in my kitchen, but I have not found anything that appeals to me. If I'm going to look at something everyday, I want it to be something that I will enjoy. The shades for the rest of my house usually are not that easy either come to think of it but finding them for my kitchen is much more frustrating.

I do have some drapes on my dining room windows, but looking at them is not something that pleases me. They have only one solid color and that is not what I wanted as I was searching for something that has a pattern to it. It is a rather silly thing to whine about I know, but searching at them just brings me down and makes me feel glum.

I know for a fact that I am not the only person who has to deal with this problem. My mom is another person who has a habit of changing the drapes in her kitchen regularly as she can never find a set she can deal with. I can understand my mother though as she has literally spent over half of her life in a kitchen.

Even though I am not much of a seamstress, I may have to give in and make my own kitchen drapes. You wouldn't think that it would be that hard. At least you wouldn't think so. I know that there is no lack of fabric out there that I would not be happy with as I have seen it and commented on the fact that it would make an incredible curtain for my kitchen. If I don't find something soon, I'm going to have to give in and sew. The skill for sewing curtains is something that I am not afraid of following, it is simply the fact that there is no sewing machine in my possession. This means my sewing will be done by hand. The sheers that I put together by hand would doubtless pass for a pillow case before a curtain, but at least I won't have a reason to whine about the pattern.

Sewing your own beadspread/pillows/cutains?

I got a sewing machine and was thinking about making my own duvet cover, pillow cases, and window curtains.

If I got simple material for Joanns maybe,
1. How expensive would it be?
2. How hard would it be? (For a not bad but not pro sewer)
3. Would it last and turn out right?

Do not be intimidated by making a bedspread, pillows and curtains because these things are far easier to make than clothing.

A duvet cover is easy to make, so are pillow cases and window treatments.

Go to your local JoAnn Fabric store and look in the Home Dec section of the pattern books. There you will find patterns with step by step instructions for each project you want to tackle. The pattern envelopes will clearly tell you how much fabric you will need. Then, you can calculate how much it will cost. If you need a lot of fabric, purchase less expensive fabrics. If you want to make some killer decorative pillows, just a half of a yard will make three 16" pillow fronts from 54" wide home dec fabric.

For pillow cases (as in sleeping pillows), go to the apparel section and check out the novelty fabrics, the flannel fabrics and some better quilting fabrics for a wide selection of patterns and colors.

Duvet covers can have a decorative fabric on one side and you can use a sheet on the other side. This not only saves money on fabric, but it also makes a lighter weight duvet cover.

Window treatments are not all that difficult to make because all those patterns really have great step by step directions. Just be sure to line all curtains so they last long as the fabric needs protection from the sun. Drapery lining is typically ivory or white. Pick either one that will look best from the outside of your house and be sure to use drapery lining, not apparel fabric for lining.
