The Top 10 Tips To Help You Plan Your Wedding On A Budget
1. Create a budget so that you’re not still paying off for your dream wedding when the kids have left home.
By making a simple list of the things that need to be bought/paid for and the date payment is due by, enables you to clearly make a note of what the bride will pay for and what the groom will pay for. Leaving the rest blank will give loving friends and family the opportunity to contribute towards your special day if they so wish and are able to.
2. Create 3 Budget amounts:
a. Your preferred budget
b. The budget you can live with
c. Your maximum budget ceiling amount.
This allows you to see what you can and cannot live without. Result: you will totally feel comfortable with the amount you do actually spend as you’ve really thought it through.
3. Spend money on things that count!
People aren’t going to necessarily remember things such as the flowers on the table or place setting name cards, or menu, so don’t spend large amounts of your budget on them. They WILL, however, remember the music, the food and the photographs so any investment in these particular areas will be very worthwhile.
4. Create your own Wedding Invites
If you have a creative streak, and are handy with the computer you can design your own wedding invitations, save to a computer file and take to an office supply shop for printing on the paper of your choice. It allows you to personalise them. Your guests will love their uniqueness and you’ll save money as well.
5. Buying the all important “Dress”
If purchasing from a bridal shop, make sure you ask for all costs associated with having your dress, fit you perfectly, showing you off at your most stunning and ready when you want it., e.g. cost of any alterations, any consultation fees, any other hidden costs. Also, ask for a discount. Quite simply, if you don’t ask you don’t get.
6. Why not make your own dress OR customise one.
If you’re handy with the sewing machine you could always make your own dress (or have a friend or dressmaker make one for you). It’ll be exactly how you want it and will fit like a glove. Alternatively you could get a cheap or slightly expensive plain white or ivory (or any other colour of your choice) dress and pop into a dressmaking shop for things like, sequined and/or diamante appliqués etc., to transform it. You’ll have an amazing one of a kind dress that looks expensive but cost a fraction of the price.
7. Paying for Services
Always get agreements in writing before making a payment or leaving a deposit, the more detailed the better. It helps to prevent any misunderstandings popping up when you are settling your bill.
8. Get Clear on what you want
If you are left confused by what the service provider is charging you for, what you’ve asked for and how and when they expect payment, just ask. It will give you peace of mind, allowing you to keep an eye on the budget. With a clear view of the costs there may be room for negotiation with the supplier also.
9. Shop on Line
Do as much of your wedding shopping on line as you can. The main advantage is that it’s CHEAPER. Many online companies are either wholesale distributors or manufacturers, either way they have no middlemen to pay so can sell for a lot less.
10. Use E-Bay for your Wedding
E-bay is one of the cheapest places to buy new and old products and some services. It’s price-driven, i.e. people will generally use it to purchase at the lowest possible price. There are over 2 million sellers, which brings about quite a bit of competition, so naturally “buyers” can only benefit.

We are planning to make a dining room table out of an old wooden door.....?
Like a front door to a house. What is the best kind of paint for that? Is there any way to seal it with something to protect the designs or pictures on the table, or would we have to buy a piece of glass to attach to the top to protect it?
We are going to section the table off into 5 sections and have each member of the family paint there own picture or designs. We would like to cut the legs off the table so that it is very low to the floor and sew pillows for everyone's place around the table. How would we go about doing that?
As you can tell we are amateurs here at the moment.
You can use latex paint from the big hardware store to cover the door. Then each person could use acrylic craft paints from the craft/hobby store to make their designs. Then cover the artwork with a non-yellowing water based polyurethane to protect it. Put on at least two coats. Follow the directions on the can about drying and sanding between coats.
The legs you can buy at the big hardware stores. You should be able to buy coffee table sized legs. They sell brackets that the legs screw into. You attach the bracket with screws to the table then the legs just screw into the brackets. It is pretty easy to make anything into a table with these.
Pillows are easy to make - you just sew a square of the desired size with the fabric wrong side out, leaving part of one end open. Turn it right side out, stuff with polyfill and hand stitch the opening closed.
Good luck with all your projects.
