Self-made Curtains: Simple Curtain Sewing
All of the curtain decorating techniques must first have the right fabric to be used. Choose an appropriate fabric that can match the room's general theme. If you are going to choose a single color fabric, make sure that the color would be complimentary to the color combinations in your room.
Next you should prepare be the materials used to sew fabric, yard sticks, tape measures, thread, scissors, a sewing machine, and other common materials used in sewing fabric. More material means more options for sewing, and make sure to include all of the basic and fundamental materials needed.
Know the exact size of the fabric to be used in a window. There can be excess areas in the fabric to be use, but make sure that it would more or less fit with window that it will be fixed into. After purchasing the fabric with the right size, its now time to decide the general outline or theme of design for your curtain.
First and foremost, do not work with the fabric immediately after being bought from the store. It would be wise to pre-wash them before working on the fabric. This is to prevent miscalculations that will come up after you realize that the size of the pre-washed fabric is different form when it was still freshly bought. Iron it after washing if necessary, and also to prevent the hassle of wrinkles when you are finally working on the fabric.
Now, when working on the fabric, make sure that no measurement is missed, if you are a beginner in sewing curtains, you can contact the materials store where you bought the fabric and ask for assistance. Traditionally, the fabric is cut halfway for the curtain to go on both sides of the window for a symmetrical effect, but innovations are always welcome. Just be sure to keep the decoration in general balanced.
When cutting the fabric to the desired design and size, make sure that you keep all edges straight, fabrics store owners don't always cut it really straight, and it will be helpful if you will take note of it immediately before you realize that you'll have to repeat the whole process all over again. Also remember to fold and sew the edges for that clean look. Even regularly fashioned curtains can look elegant if you can manage to fold the fabric properly according to your planned design.
Of course, complex designing of the fabric is still up to you, the designer, whether you want it to be applied when sewing curtains or not. Take note though, you don't have to make the curtain design look very sophisticated in order to achieve that stylish look, and sometimes even simple curtain designs can make up for the lack of design.
