The Pros and Cons of Dahle Vantage Paper Scissors
One implement that every office, household, classroom, and individual needs is a good pair of scissors. It's one of those tools that, although you may not use it on a daily basis, when you need it, you need it, and you probably don't want to spend a lot of cash on it. The solution to this problem is a pair of Dahle Vantage Paper Scissors. These are high-quality shears that are designed for cutting paper (i.e. coupons, newspaper articles, craft supplies, etc.) and they're very affordable. So here are the pros of these tools, plus a couple of cons.
The Pros:
- These cutters come in three different sizes. They are as follows:
- Model #40005: 5 inches.
- Model #40006: 6 inches.
- Model #40008: 8 inches.
- These cutting tools are very affordable. The 40005 pair is the cheapest in this series and can be yours for the low price of $3.49. This makes this pair of scissors affordable even for those on tight budgets. (They would be great if bought in bulk quantities for schools.) The 6-inch model costs $4.49 and the 8-inch pair retails for $5.49.
- The blades on these scissors are made from stainless steel that is rust-resistant, so if your pair gets wet, you won't need to worry about anything. Your blades will always remain sharp.
- These tools can cut any type of paper imaginable and can also handle card stock. They are perfect for crafts.
- The handles are made from molded plastic and they are comfortable, allowing you to have a pleasant cutting experience. It is unlikely your hands will get tired when using these shears.
- These scissors are perfect for use at home, school, or even at work. They are a great choice for people who need a basic cutting tool that won't break the bank.
The Cons:
- The types of materials you can cut with these scissors are limited. For example, you won't be able to cleanly cut fabric, so these tools aren't ideal for people who sew a lot. You may be able to use them when knitting or crocheting though, so long as you're just cutting strands of yarn and not knitted fabric.
- These are Dahle's entry-level cutting tools so they lack the features of more advanced products such as the Super Shears and Professional Scissors. Those products can easily cut items other than paper and they are made from higher quality materials. (For example, Super Shear blades are made from high-quality Solingen steel, the same steel that's used in many of the company's premium paper shredders.)
- These cutters have a very limited 90-day warranty while Super Shears have a lifetime warranty.
- Also, while the handles of Vantage scissors are pretty comfortable, they are not as ergonomic as some other pairs of scissors. If you need shears like that, you should check out Dahle Vantage Comfort-Grip Shears.
Overall, Dahle Vantage scissors are a good choice if you simply need an affordable set of shears for cutting paper. It's wonderful that these cutters are so affordable given the rough economy, and that they're high-quality despite having a low price point. Although they lack some of the features of Dahle's more expensive cutting tools, these shears should more than meet your paper cutting needs.

Please share sewing-related gift ideas?
I need some gift ideas for my sister who's setting up to start sewing at home. I found some fabric shears, but I'm sure she'll need other things. Seam ripper? Small thread scissors? Cutting mat? Pincushion? Boxes or bags for organization? What are essentials in your opinion? Which exact items do you have, that you love?
I'm looking for brand-name best-quality things, the kind of things she wouldn't spend the money on for herself, because it's a gift and I don't buy her many gifts. Please link me if you can, to your favorite items!
Kai scissors, for me, no question ( http://www.kaiscissors.com ).... I prefer the balance and sharpness. But a lot of people like Gingher and Costco currently has a heck of a deal on a boxed set of Ginghers for around $80, if I recall, including applique scissors, buttonhole scissors, tailor points, and small trimmers.Just found a review of them.... http://thehouseofkent.blogspot.com/2007/10/todays-costco-find.html -- my local Costco had the sets in again earlier this month.
Seam rippers, I prefer the white, flat- handled Clover brand, but if she's sewed professionally, she may be using razor blades or scalpel
blades for ripping. Is she a beginner or experienced?
What does she have for pressing equipment? If she's making garments, she'll need a tailor's ham, clapper, point press, sleeveboard,
seam roll to do a pro job: http://www.taunton.com/threads/pages/tvt052.asp
When I'm traveling, the equipment I take with me besides the machine are 10" Kai dressmaker shears, a seam ripper, a silk organza press cloth, a cotton muslin press cloth, a clapper with a point press (I can use it as a sleeve board if I have to by turning it upside down in a nest of bath towels), a chakoner or a piece of tailor's chalk, a packet of hand embroidery needles, a few pins, and whatever project I'm working on. (This is the point press/clapper I use: http://www.sews.com/notions/pressing/1010739l.jpg )
I can improvise the ham and seamroll with bath towels, and assume I can scrounge up a basic iron and ironing board.
If your sister hasn't done much sewing, may I suggest a pressing video or two? Good pressing can make mediocre sewing look good; mediocre pressing can make good sewing look homemade.
There are two good ones that I know of: Cecelia Podolak's Fearless Pressing http://www.ceceliapodolak.com/book.html and Mary Roehr's Pressing to Perfection: http://www.maryroehr.com/pressing-to-perfection.html
There are a number of other possibilities for gifts for sewing out there... if you can give me an idea of what level she's sewing at, and the type of sewing she does, I can suggest other things.
Does she subscribe to any magazines? If not, a subscription to Sew News, Threads or Sew Beautiful or another more to her style tastes might be good. Sew News is beginner/intermediate, Threads is a little beginner, mostly intermediate to well experienced, and Sew Beautiful is specialized in heirloom "fancy" sewing, primarily for children. There are also a number of new magazines around aimed at beginners that I haven't spent a whole lot of time with, like Sew Simple. If she's a saver of good stuff, and makes garments, I'd strongly consider Threads even if it's mostly over her head at the moment -- the articles are solid, and they make excellent reference material later.
I'm fairly experienced at sewing -- I never use pincushions. My favorite pin dish at the moment is an old Corelle bowl with a magnet from a dead hard drive stuck on the bottom of it on the outside... the magnet holds the pins well, and because it tips the bowl slightly, it's easier to reach into.
My ironing board is my mother's, from the late 40's -- it's hard to find anything sturdy as that is until you get up into the $200 range or more.
I have two irons: a $20 Black and Decker classic that I use for "dirty" jobs involving starch, fusibles or similar (I can scrub the sole plate with a copper Chore Girl to get the yuck off) and a Rowenta steam generator iron that was a present. When it dies, I'll replace it with a Sussman gravity feed pro iron, like you see in dry cleaners.
I have a small cutting mat that I use for cutting straight strips of fabric, but never entire garments. I prefer the Martelli cutter for multiple heavy layers (not a good cutter for a house with kids!) or the Olfa safety rotary cutter for most jobs (ok for houses with kids if you lock it and keep it tucked away) -- rotary cutters are WAY too dangerous for kids to have unsupervised access.
For cutting mats, I prefer the white polyethylene Sew Fit mat to the various colored mats by Olfa, Fiskars, etc. Doesn't stink, doesn't warp, can be stored rolled or hanging up or stuffed under the bed.
