Why does my sewing machine needle stick?
I have a singer sewing machine, it's around 15 years old or so... I know that sounds like it's really old but it looks great and until recently it worked great. For some reason whenever I sew my needle sticks in the fabric and my thread tension for the top thread gets incredibly tight, I've tried adjusting my thread tension but that did not help at all. I have sewn quite a few things with this machine with no problem. I have adjusted my needle size depending on the material I am sewing. Does anyone have any answers of how to get my needle to stop sticking in the fabric and my thread tension to work properly? Everytime the needle sticks I have to raise it with the knob on the right. I'm wondering if I am doing something wrong of if this is a problem with certain machines. Any help is greatly appreciated ! Thanks so much.
It sounds like you've missed a step in the threading process, but I'm sure you have ruled that out so...
Remove the "bobbin holder" There is a screw on the bobbin casing that adjusts the thread tension for the bobbin. It is set by the factory. load thread into it, and hang the bobbin by a few inches of thread. Pretend it is a yo you and bob it up and down by the tread. If the bobbin and case do not lower and release some thread the tension is to tight,adjust the screw counter clock ways until you get a few inches of thread release with each yo yo bouncing.
Check that you do not have some thread or lint balled up along the treading path, especially in some of the harder to see parts inside the machine.
Check that your tread is releasing from your thread source, sometimes the slice in a spool that is used for holding the thread to stop it from unraveling before you buy it can accidentally catch while you are sewing.
If getting treat from the large stand alone cones make sure that it is perfectly lined up with the thread guide. make sure that it is unraveling tread with equal ease all the way around it.
Make sure that you are threading the machine with the presser foot in the proper position. Up i think, but try both.
Most likely you just need it to be taken apart and cleaned in some hard to reach places, probably some material wedged along the thread path...
