When I press the pedal for an industrial sewing machine it starts briefly then stops as though is it locking?

it is a brother .
or a brake is on ,there seems to be an oil window which is nearly empty ,there is an oil resevoir beneth the machine which has a lot of oil in it .any ideas ? ewhats wrong ,it may not have been used in a long time .

Oiling might be a good idea.However, the problem might be in the assembly of the pedal, clutch and pulley. Does the motor have a clutch? The clutch controls the motor speed, to go you press forward and to operate the brake you press the pedal backward. Are you pressing backwards without realizing? You have to ease off the pedal carefully to slow it down, pressing backwards suddenly or too hard activates the brake. It took a while for me to get comfortable with the controls myself. It's also possible that the pedal to the pulley/clutch assembly has come loose. This happens in transporting the machine and if the machine has any operating vibrations. There should be a wingnut that clamps the pedal bar to the pulley, if this is loose the machine won't go. If this isn't the problem then a trip to a technician would be in order. The machine, if it's been in storage, might need a professional tune-up. It's not expensive and it's a very worthwhile investment.
