Fancy dress?

My son has to dress up on friday for school as a character from a children's book. The thing is, I don't want to spend £20 on an outfit he'll only wear for one day, I haven't got much time and nor do I have a sewing machine! I'm totally stuck for ideas. Can you suggest anything? Thanks in advance :o)
Thanks for all of your suggestions so far. It can be any book, there's not a particular one. I like the Harry Potter idea but am a bit worried it will be done by half the class aswell!

What about making a mask from a paper plate with a lolly stick stuck to the bottom? You could make it together and he could be the tiger, if he's quite young, from The Tiger Who Came To Tea, or the tiger from Jungle Book if he's a bit older. He could wear black and orange with it and you could add crepe paper stripes to it if you were feeling artistic. Or if he's a bit older, how about making a big peach together out of papier mache so that he can wear his own clothes and go as James And The Giant Peach?
