Why was the sewing machine invented?

My sister is doing a report on sewing machines for her History class and needs help with it. She has a few basic reasons why sewing machines were invented but would like to know more.

As with a lot of inventions; the sewing machine enabled workers in factories to be more productive. Productivity means profit. Profit provides an incentive to research and improve design, and then the invention becomes less expensive, more efficient, and more commonplace.
