Tribulations For Ludhiana Sewing Machine Industry Continue

The sewing industry in Ludhiana, which was already suffering due to stiff competition from Chinese players, is now in deeper trouble as volatility in raw material prices continue to hurt the small-scale units constituting the sector. Industry representatives are now seeking government assistance to resolve the existing issue and enable SME sewing units to improve their dwindling margins. Price volatility hurting SME sewing units Ludhiana sewing machine sector, which accounts for nearly 80-90% of the total domestic sewing machine production, is facing serious troubles. Fluctuating raw material prices is costing small-scale units dearly as hike in prices of essential inputs is leading to a rise in their production cost, thereby affecting their bottom lines and sales. "Volatility in prices of inputs has only added to the woes of the already-suffering SME sewing machine units since most of them are compelled to import components from low-cost component supplier destinations like China to cater to the domestic market," said Tejinder P Singh, proprietor of Bono Industries, a small-sized sewing machine manufacturer in Ludhiana, Punjab. A large chunk of the industrial sewing machine market is already being catered by Chinese suppliers. Now with Ludhiana sewing machine units also turning to imported sewing machines, China's sewing machine industry is certain to gain an edge in this sector. "Assemblers of sewing machines are left with no option but to import components from China as sewing machine body and cabinet manufacturers have unnaturally jacked up the prices of their products, making it difficult for SME units to sustain their operations," said J Singh, proprietor of Mankoo Manufacturing Co, a small-sized industrial sewing machine manufacturer in Ludhiana. Ludhiana Sewing Machine Dealers and Assemblers Association has sought government intervention to ensure that raw material prices are not artificially hiked in order to provide a relief to assemblers and SME manufacturers. Is it something like a Tiny Tailor? If so, it won't do what you need it to for clothing. On the other hand, if it's an old 1950's style straight stitcher, you can get attachments for those machines that will allow you to make clothes fairly easily. Easiest, however, would be a machine with built in zigzag and buttonholes.

What I want for beginners in sewing:

- a machine that doesn't scare you
- a machine that isn't balky (cheap new machines are often very
balky or need adjustments often and are rarely repairable --
just too frustrating to learn on!)
- very good straight stitch
- good zigzag (4-5 mm is fine, more than that is gravy)
- a method of making buttonholes that makes sense to you
- adjustable presser foot pressure (which helps some fabric
handling issues)
- accessory presser feet that don't cost an arm and a leg
(machines that use a "short shank foot" typically handle
generic presser feet pretty well. Some brands of machines use
proprietary or very expensive presser feet)

If the budget stretches far enough:

- blindhem and stretch blindhem stitches
- triple zigzag (nice for elastic applications)
- a couple of decorative stitches (you won't use them nearly as
much as you think)
- electronic machine because of the needle position control and
because the stepper motors give you full "punching force" at
slow sewing speeds -- mechanical machines often will stall at
slow speeds.

Please go to the best sewing machine dealers around and ask them
to show you some machines in your price range, *especially* used
machines you can afford. You'll get a far better machine buying
used than new, and a good dealer is worth their weight in sewing
machine needles when you get a machine problem -- often they can
talk you through the problem over the phone. While you're trying
things out, try a couple of machines (sewing only, not combo
sewing-embroidery) over your price limit, just so you can see
what the difference in stitch quality and ease of use might be.
You may find you want to go for the used Cadillac. Or you might
want the new basic Chevy. Might as well try both out.
